Borage oil characteristics
Borage (Borago officinalis), besides being an excellent vegetable, with powers very tested diuretics, also known for its richness in essential fatty acids (EFA). They are essential in the metabolism because they are considered necessary for the proper production of prostglandinas (precursors of hormones capable of regulating many functions in our body) and the proper functioning of body cells or brain. Borage oil contains essential omega-6. Among these, mostly between 36-38% of linoleic acid and a 18-25% gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). The former is more readily available and can be obtained from various plant sources, such as walnuts are plant foods that have more quantity, avocado oil, soybean, sunflower, corn, almonds, peanuts, etc. The second type of essential oil does not appear in significant amounts in any food except from that found in borage oil, evening primrose or black currant seeds.
Difference between evening primrose oil and borage
Borage oil., Like evening primrose oil is extracted by cold pressing. It contains many essential fatty acids (EFA) and the plant is easier to produce than the evening primrose. Borage oil also contains a higher proportion of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) than Evening Primrose so you do not have to eat so much oil. These are the reasons which are often replaced by evening primrose and borage, or adulterate the oil first with the second. The problem that exists is that borage, plus essential fatty acids, unlike evening primrose, also contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that affect the liver when used in high doses or long term. These same compounds have proven carcinogenic in animal tests. This is the reason why we recommend evening primrose oil, borage preferably.
Borage oil properties
Borage oil is used with the same properties as the evening primrose.
Dosage: 1000 mg of borage oil containing about 240 mg gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) which is the amount that is typically used in most treatments. If you prefer to use evening primrose should eat about 3 times more, ie 3000 mg of oil to reach the same amount of GLA and black currant, about 1500 mg. All of these doses should be divided into three portions, mixed with food.
Instructions: Take one softgel daily, preferably with a main meal of the day.
